Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder used to be known as Manic Depression. It is an illness in which people experience periods of low mood (as in depression) and other periods of high mood in which they find themselves unable to sleep; often spend large sums of money on items that they do not need; find themselves being promiscuous; feel their thinking is rapid and unstopping.

When in these high or "manic" periods, people often feel initially that they are having a great time, but then the high becomes more severe and often they feel distressed by their thinking and behaviour, and that they cannot stop.

Bipolar Disorder can be a very debilitating illness which causes sufferers to find it difficult to hold down relationships or jobs. It is often well treated with medication, as prescribed by a psychiatrist, but a clear understanding of trigger factors to cause the highs and lows can be extremely helpful in the long-term management of the condition.

Twenty20 Psychology offers a range of therapies which are helpful in treating Bipolar Disorder.
